From random to readable

A password you can pronounce still needs careful choices.

ChantKey builds invented words from randomly selected syllables. The result has a pronunciation guide, but it is not a dictionary word or a phrase with a meaning to remember.

1. Choose a familiar sound

Pick a language whose sounds you and the listener know. ChantKey offers English, Russian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and French sound patterns. Results use Latin characters.

2. Give length some room

Choose Ritual for the longest results, or compare the length ranges shown for each preset. Longer results join several invented words with hyphens. Whisper, Chant, and Ritual are product settings, not guarantees of security.

3. Check how it sounds

Read the pronunciation guide, then ask the listener to repeat it back. Sounds can have more than one spelling. Confirm the exact letters, capital letters, hyphens, and any other symbols before relying on it.

4. Keep the exact result

Copy the password into your password manager and use a different one for each account. For a private account, a password manager can fill it without saying it aloud. Only dictate credentials intended for the listener.

Pronounceable passwords, passphrases, and random strings

A pronounceable password combines syllables into invented words. A passphrase combines words from a word list. A random character string does not follow a spoken pattern. Each method has a different set of possible results; a readable result is not automatically a strong one.

Length, the generation method, and uniqueness matter. CISA recommends long, random, unique passwords and a password manager. See CISA's password guidance for the broader advice.

Common questions

Can everyone spell the result by hearing it?

No. Accent, background noise, and alternative spellings can still cause mistakes. The guide helps you pronounce the result; it does not guarantee unambiguous dictation. Test it with the person who needs to enter it.

Does ChantKey save generated passwords?

Passwords are generated on the server using Web Crypto and sent to your browser over HTTPS. Passwords and pronunciation are not saved or included in analytics. Your generator settings can be remembered in this browser.

How many passwords can I generate?

Up to 20 in a rolling 24-hour period, shared by visitors on the same network. Opening this page does not use the allowance. Press Generate when you are ready.
